NDIS

What is NDIS exactly? That’s a fair question that we have the answer to! Here at Local Care Solutions, we can help you have a better understanding of the Government-assisted scheme.

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It’s a way for Australian citizens with a disability under the age of 65 to obtain funding for the specific care and disability support services that they need to live an independent life.

The NDIS is for people with a permanent and significant disability which has an impact on their ability to participate in everyday activities and to reach daily goals. The impairment can be physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, visual, hearing, or psychosocial.

Those eligible for services under the program will be able to work out what reasonable and necessary support they need to live an independent, comfortable life and achieve their goals. The NDIS will then provide them with funding to pay for such assistance.

You can find out more about eligibility by visiting the NDIS website.

BACKGROUND TO NDIS

Within the next five years, the NDIS will provide more than $22 billion in funding annually to an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disabilities. The scheme can provide participants with information and connections to services in their communities, such as doctors, sporting clubs, supporting groups, libraries, and schools. In addition, the NDIS’ disability support services include informing participants about the kinds of support provided by each state and territory government.

The NDIS Plan

Once you have provided all the necessary information, the NDIA will determine whether you are qualified for NDIS support. The agency will then send you an “access decision letter” informing you about the decision.

For eligible participants, the next step is arranging a planning meeting to discuss your goals and the national and local support services you’ll need to achieve them. The meeting can help you:

1. Create a plan

Everyone’s plan is different. The NDIS will ask a range of questions in regard to certain areas of life to help develop a plan that provides the best support to the participant.

2. Use the plan

There are people and organisations who will help participants use their plans, find out the different types of budgets, and how to use the myplace portal. The plan will then be sent to the participant for review.

3. Review plan and goals

The plan review is the opportunity to check that the support will work for the participant and will help them pursue their goals. The plan must have at least one goal. Otherwise, the NDIS won’t be able to finish the planning process and approve the plan.

NDIS Providers

NDIS providers are one of the main contact points for NDIS participants. They are required to operate and comply with relevant Australian laws, rules, and regulations in delivering local support services to the people under their care.

The two main categories of NDIS providers are registered and unregistered. To help you make an informed decision and get the best support available, it’s important to know the difference between the two.

NDIS Registered Providers

If a service provider is NDIS-registered, it means that they have gained the approval of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to support NDIS participants. They can have access to the NDIA-managed individuals and build a broader online presence through the NDIS provider finder tool.

Registered providers, like us here at Local Care Solutions, work in accordance with the stringent NDIS practice standards. As such, they are often seen as more trustworthy and credible by many participants. In addition, their disability and other support services are easily accessible as bookings and payments are handled through the NDIS portal.

Unregistered Providers

Unregistered service providers may not have yet received approval from the NDIS, or they have chosen not to register their services. They can still operate, however, since they are unregistered, they are unable to work directly with NDIA-managed participants.

Although they are not accountable to the NDIA, unregistered providers are still mandated to keep records of their business, comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct, and perform NDIS Worker Screening Checks for all their employees.
